Proof men drive 4x4s in bid to look macho

Men who drive imposing 4x4s are insecure about their masculinity, according to a new study.

Research showed men were more likely to buy one of the controversial gas guzzlers after being told they had "weak" male characteristics.

Psychologist Robb Willer said owning a 4x4 was a classic display of macho behaviour to over-compensate for a slight on their masculinity.

Many of the men whose masculinity was questioned went on to voice greater support for the Iraq war and made efforts to denounce gays.

The study could help explain the 4x4 phenomenon, with sales soaring from just 27,022 in 1990 to 179,439 last year. This year, sales are already up to 93,988 and well on the way to a new record.

Researchers sent out a "gender identity" survey to 111 men and women who were sent feedback that their responses indicated a masculine or a feminine identity.

Dr Willer of New York's Cornell University, said as men were made insecure about their masculinity, they became more willing to buy a 4x4 over another vehicle.

But Paul Watters, head of road policy for the AA Motoring Trust, argued: "A lot of 4x4s are driven by mothers on the school run in cities and towns."

"There is also a feeling that 4x4s are being stigmatised when they are often a lifestyle and fashion choice."
